"Knit to fit"
When I teach "knit to fit" we draw a rough sketch of our body shape and put in all the measurements -- the usual bust, waist, hip -- and in addition the measurement from shoulder to waist, width of shoulders, armhole depth (put a magazine under your arm keeping it parallel to the floor and measure from the crown of the shoulder to the book -- your actual arm hole depth). Then make a sketch of what you want to make. Put in the amount of ease you like and you have the measurements of the sweater you want to knit. If you are short waisted you make the adjustment above the waist but be sure you keep enough ease for the bust line. We also sketch what the pattern is going to knit if there isn't a schematic with the pattern. You can then compare your measurements and see where the changes need to be made.
