Tips
Kitchner Stitch
When I learned to do the kitchner the instructor had us
knit two swatches about four inches across -- not bound
off. Then we pinned the two pieces facing each other with
the open stitches facing and just touching. Then we took
a threaded yarn needle and proceeded to copy the stitches
with yarn. The pattern we said was up in the first loop
on the bottom piece (closest to you) and down in the
opposite stitch away from you, up in its next door
neighbor, down in the first stitch on the bottom again,
and up in its neighbor. Continue across the piece and
gently pull your stitches until they match the tension in
your work. It is easy to see what to do because you are
just matching the rows already knit. After you are
comfortable with this, then try it on the knitting
needles. The down on the needle closest to you is a knit
action, up is a purl action. On the needle away from you,
down is purl and up is knit. The first time you enter a
stitch you leave it on the needle, the second time take
if off the needle. Each stitch is entered twice, with the
exception of the first and last stitch. Sometimes it
works out that they are only once. When you first start
working on the needles do a few stitches and then look
and see if the stitches are lining up right. If they are
not, take those stitches out and start again changing the
side you started on.
