Broomstick Lace Afghan

General Instructions:
Each row is worked in two steps. First, drawing up loops
with crochet hook and placing them on the knitting
needle. Second, working single crochet in groups of loops
to form pattern. All work is done from the right side.
Approximate size: 42" by 63" ( to make larger
add in multiples of 5)
Materials: 5 skeins (240
yds each) Winter White -- main color
2 skeins Turquoise, 2 skeins Green, 1 Grape, 1 Red and 1
Orange
1 knitting needle size 50 1 crochet hook size K
Gauge: 5 patterns = 5 ½ inches. 5 rows = 5 inches.
Note: See color sequence at end of pattern. Begin each
row with next color and fasten off at the end of each two
step row.

With A, chain 190, loosely, and work row 1. 38 patterns
Row 1, Step 1: (See fig 1) Holding needle in left hand,
hook in right hand and put loop on hook onto the needle.
Working left to right on chain, *insert hook into next
ch, draw loop through and, careful not to twist, place
this loop on the needle: repeat from * to end of chain.
190 loops on the needle.
Row 1, Step 2: (See figs 2, 3, and 4) Working from right
to left, slip 5 loops from the needle, turn loops to the
right in a group; insert hook through center of group and
draw yarn through; careful not to tighten the first loop,
ch 1 at top of group, work 5 sc in same space, * sl next
5 loops from pin, turn to right as before, work, 5 sc in
center of space of group; repeat from* to end. 38
patterns Fasten off.
Row 2, Step 1: ( See fig 5) Draw up a loop with next
color and place on pin, * working from left to right,
insert hook under back loop only of next sc, draw loop
through and place on pin; repeat from * to end. 190
loops.
Row 2, Step 2: Same as step 2 of row 1.
Repeat Row 2, steps 1 and 2 for pattern. Work 1 row each
*B, A, C, A, D, A, E, A, F, A* repeat 3 times, then work
, B, A, C, A. Add fringe as desired.
