Pretzel Sweater

Size 5 - 24" circular
needle
Size 8 - 29" circular needle
Gauge: 4 sts = 1"
Instructions:
With #5 needles, cast on 68 sts., place a marker, cast on
68 sts., place another marker and be careful not to twist
the stitches when joining. Working in the round, k 1, p
1, ribbing for 2 1/2". Change to size 8 needles and
begin stripe pattern, increasing 16 stitches evenly
across first round. After the fourth row of the first
stripe is completed, knit to the first marker, cast on
136 sts., place another marker, knit to next marker and
cast on 136 sts., place 4th marker. (424 sts on needle.)
Work one row even. Following stripe pattern, decrease 1
stitch on EACH SIDE of marker, EVERY OTHER round until
all stripes are completed.
Bind off all stitches in seed stitch. Sew side seams
leaving 8 inches open for armholes. Work 1 row reverse
single crochet around neck edge and armholes.
Before doing the two rows of seed stitch, you might want
to take the sweater off and try it on to see how low the
neckline will be. If it is too low,
just keep going in pattern before starting the seed
stitch. To take it off
the needle to try on, just run a strand of yarn through
the stitches, and
then when you have tried it on put it back on the needle
and finish up. You
can use multiple strands to make up the 4 stitch to the
inch gauge. The one
I made up finished about 46 inches at the bust. It should
fit a little
loosely. To increase size work at 3.5 sts to the inch, to
decrease at about
4.5 to the inch. The wilder the colors the more fun, but
it is elegant in
shades of ivory.
Try mixing colors and textures.
STRIPE PATTERN: Each symbol represents one (1) round;
i.e., Stripe C = 5 rounds, one round of purl, one round
of knit, one round of purl, etc.
